Annette John-Hall: Confessions of a Former Flash-Mobber
I'm ashamed to admit it. But considering the events of late, I feel I have to fully cop to my own dubious transgression. I was a teenage flash-mobber.
No, I'm not proud of it. And it goes without saying I wouldn't condone it for my children. But back then, as they do with most teens, emotions - not common sense - informed my decision-making.

Whatever the Name, It's a Crime
"Catch and Wreck," a term cops said that kids are using to describe recent beatings of adults, is actually a misnomer for "Catchin' Rep," as in a reputation, said a nonprofit founder who works with kids at the street level.
"They think it's very funny that everyone's saying it wrong," said Rashida Ali-Campbell, founder of LoveLovingLove Inc., a group that promotes holistic-health education and love to impoverished Philadelphia neighborhoods.

A parade of advocates and alumni pleaded with the School Reform Commission not to close William Penn High, and superintendent Arlene Ackerman says she heard them. Even though the district staff recommended closing William Penn, saying enrollment was dropping and the heating system was on the verge of failure, Ackerman withdrew a resolution to close the school.:

The Daily Pennsylvanian
For longtime Philly resident Tamara Ali, William Penn High School changed her life. A 2000 graduate of the North Philadelphia school, Ali participated in its communications and journalism program, which at the time was one of the best in the city.
"I transferred to William Penn from Strawberry Mansion, which was in a bad neighborhood," she said. At her former school, Ali's grades were poor, and she was frustrated with the lack of opportunities to pursue her own passions. But things improved once she arrived at William Penn -"Their communications program … enabled me to join the newspaper and get an internship with Comcast. My grades also started improving, and I graduated with honors."

Press Release:
Los Angeles, CA – Philadelphia-area residents have a rare opportunity to learn how to transform neighborhoods and live independently off-off-the-grid at a multi-media lecture, Philly Earthship, 7:00pm, Thursday, April 23, 2009 at Philadelphia’s Pyramid Club. A silent auction featuring exclusive items and unique autographs donated by such celebrities as Vanessa Williams, Olivia Newton-John, Harry Shearer and other well-known entertainers and professional athletes will accompany the presentation along with refreshments and live music. The award-winning documentary film, Garbage Warrior, will also be shown. The film chronicles the history of Earthship’s comfortable energy efficient structures, of which thousands have been built throughout the world during the past decade.
The community event is the first of its kind for the City of Brotherly Love and is hosted by Philadelphians Rashida Ali-Campbell, of the city’s non-profit charity Love, Loving, Love, and Rita Berger, of Los Angeles-based entertainment company Rita B. Management.
“Love, Loving, Love believes in making efforts to help heal and transform the city of Philadelphia,” says Rashida Ali-Campbell, founder of Love, Loving, Love. “Earthship Biotecture has been building all over the world. It is a viable solution to poverty. When I saw Garbage Warrior, I knew instantly that Philadelphia desperately needed an Earthship. Not only will it be the first one in an urban setting in the United States, but it will be a giant step in making a positive impact on our community.”
“Extending the opportunity to live with the earth, rather than on it, and create housing, jobs and educational opportunities that ensure a healthy future for my fellow Philadelphians is long overdue and much needed,” says Rita Berger. “Independence started in Philadelphia. Earthship epitomizes true independence, so there’s no better place to bring Earthship Biotecture.”
“When Love, Loving, Love contacted Earthship Biotecture about building an Earthship home in Philadelphia, we responded enthusiastically. We are committed to this project” said Jonah Reynolds, Earthship Biotecture partner and builder. “An Earthship reflects a community’s power through collective building.
It is a testament to humanity's potential of living ‘with’ the planet by recycling by-products of our society into beautiful modern housing without fossil fuels; a testament that perfectly reflects ‘Brotherly Love.’”
Sponsored by Philadelphia’s own Pyramid Club, the event is admission free and will be held at the Sponsor’s location at 1735 Market Street.
